What you have could be a very worn or neglected instrument needing between $5009 and $1000 of overhaul to get it into a prime state. The Wilkins, really well overhauled- and that requires a very skilled tech with specific experience, technical expertise, equipment, and inclination which is awfully rare along with viel geld from the owner- could be a fine flute. It might be a gem- albeit a dated gem, but it's far more likely that a GOOD modern student instrument would equal or outperform it.Ĭarefully and completely overhauled to "perfection"? Well, almost any flute redone to that level will immediately shift the definitive cause of any detectable difference to the player from the instrument. Forty years later you'd have to evaluate the specific instrument. The Wilkins model was, by all accounts, carefully designed and- probably more importantly- carefully manufactured when originally sold. Broad brush "this is a great instrument" assessments have validity in a statistical sense, but are of substantially less use in reference to any specific instrument.
